The Francisco Carolinum presents the blockchain collection it has been building since 2021 — comprehensively, and for the first time — drawn together across Ethereum, Tezos and Bitcoin. The complete Sovrn set on Ethereum, eleven works, one from each collection, entered that permanent collection between 2022 and 2025; eight of its ten artists are among the 148 named in the exhibition.

The blockchain as a medium
The exhibition presents groups of works by international artists, along with series and projects made in collaboration with the museum. Its argument is that the blockchain is not only technological infrastructure but an artistic medium in its own right — from smart contracts and code-based work through to pieces that exist entirely on-chain.
The digital holdings are shown with selected physical works that stand in relation to their digital counterparts, setting different kinds of artistic practice against one another.
The collection is shown in two places at once. Alongside the rooms at the Francisco Carolinum it can be walked through in the museum’s virtual building in Cryptovoxels — two vantage points on a collection that keeps growing.
The museum’s Curator for Digital Art, Julia Staudach, both curates this exhibition and facilitated the acceptance of the Sovrn set into the permanent collection of photography and media art of Upper Austria.
Sovrn artists in the roster
Eight of the ten artists in the Sovrn set are named in the announced list of participating artists.
The museum’s list names 148 artists rather than individual works, so which pieces are hung is not yet public. Norman Harman and aleqth, whose works complete the Sovrn set, are not among them.
